Ikara Local Government was created out of former Zaria Native Authotity following the Local Government reforms of 1976 at the time of creation, it comprised of Ikara, Kubau and Makarfi District. However, I 1991 the Local Government was reduced in size with the creation of Makarfi Local Government and Kubau Local Government in 1996 respectively.

 Traditional Institution: The traditional institution plays a vital role in administering of the Local Government Area. Accordingly, each of the two number if districts in the local government area is headed by the district head, subordinated hieratically by the Village Head and Ward Heads that traditionally coordinate the administration of their areas.
